How to Play ?
As of version 1.1 of Wargame (and Wargame Lite), there is an in-game tutorial. It will give you quick and detailed instructions on how to play. You can also check out our online tutorial here.
General Concepts / Main Menu
Wargame is a turn-based grand strategy game where you can take control of 6 different factions, conquer many countries and dominate the world. You can start a new local game by tapping the "New Game" button, or start a network session by tapping the "Network" button. You can play with up to 5 other players on the same iPhone, or via Bluetooth, WiFi or Internet (Direct IP) connection (or any combination of those).
New Game: start a new local game. You can setup a local game with up to 6 players on the same iPhone. Resume Game: resume the current game. This button will be enabled when the game loads an autosave on launch. Load Game: gives you an editable list of saved games. Save Game: pick a name and save your current game. Network: start a new network game. Up to 6 players via Bluetooth, WiFi or Internet (Direct IP). Settings: the gear located on the bottom right of the screen gives you access to the settings menu. As of now, only audio settings are available. When you start a new game, you'll be prompted with a factions setup screen. For each faction, you can set it as either being a human Player, an active AI or a neutral AI. You then choose a name for your General and pick a game objective from over 20 different objectives. Look at their in-game descriptions to find a game mode that fits your domination mood. Game Interface
![]() Tactical Map: This is were you'll plan most of the game actions. Top Bar: When no country is selected, it indicates the name of the faction currently playing. If a country is selected, the top bar shows its name. It also prints the current game date (season and year). Bottom Toolbar: Hidden by default, the bottom toolbar can be revealed by tapping on the triangle on the bottom right edge (this button is always visible). Action Bar: visible only when you've selected a country belonging to your faction, it allows you to perform various actions related to this country. Tactical Map Manipulation
![]() Scroll: when you're zoomed in, you can swipe your finger across the map to scroll around it. Select: you can select any country by tapping once inside its boundaries (whether your control it or not). If you want to cancel your selection, just tap on the sea. Happily, there is plenty of water on the map. Map tip: if you want to perform an action involving two distant countries, use the double-tap to fast zoom. The double-tap doesn't clear your selection. Example: you want to attack Australia from Canada. Select Canada, tap on the "Move Units" button, then double-tap to unzoom and double-tap again on the Australia to zoom on it. Then select Australia with a single tap and conclude your attack. Action Bar
This bar appears only after you have selected a country you own. It allows you to perform actions related to this country:
Overlay Status Bars
When the bottom toolbar is hidden, you can tap on the "Status Bars" button, on the bottom-center part of the screen. This button shows/hides overlay informations about your garrisons on the map. Those bars only appears when you're sufficiently zoomed-in (that is when flags are also visible). Colored bars inform you on the number of troops/ships/planes you have in your countries. Each bar can show ten gradations.
Bottom Toolbar
![]() Skip turn: Wargame is turn-based. Every action you decide is queued and resolved only when you skip your turn. In a single player game, when you skip your turn, the iPhone computes AI controlled factions' moves and gives you back the control. In a multiplayer game, you'll have to wait until all players have skipped their turn. While your in wait mode, you can still get info on your countries and chat with other players. Action Queue: You can review all the actions you have decided in this table view. If needed, you can delete any action you've planned except for spy actions that are immediate. World Upgrade: Those upgrades gives you powerful and unique special abilities depending on your faction. They are very expensive but can provide you an decisive advantage over your enemies. Spy Action: Gathering intelligence about your rivals can give you a decisive advantage. In this section you can spy a country, or try a bribery to weaken a country. General: Review your mission, status and grade. Your victories grant you medals and honor. Scroll through your medals and tap on any of it to get its description and its award conditions. Main Menu: You can return to the main menu (to save your progression for example), and then continue your game with the "Resume Game" button. |

Country Upgrades
![]() AWFDS: Air Water Field Defense System is a fortification that increases your country defense score by 50%. Supply Center: Allows you to buy units in the country where it's built. Unique upgrade: Each country can build a special upgrade depending on the faction you play. For example, US owned countries can build capitalism which increases the country's cash per turn by 50%. This only applies in the countries where you have bought capitalism. World Upgrades
Each faction has a unique World Upgrade which will cost them far more but will also give it a consequent bonus. Some of them require special actions to be activated or used after they've been built. When you buy a world upgrade, the action first gets queued in the Action Queue and is applied next turn. Consequently, it can be cancelled from the Action Queue.
Manhattan Project (United States of America's World Upgrade)
Blitzkrieg (The Great Reich's World Upgrade)
Quick Learner (Empire of the Sun's World Upgrade)
Jihad (Great Khalifa's World Upgrade)
00 Agents (European Federation's World Upgrade)
Moscow Pact (USSR's World Upgrade)

Why use Spying ?
Spying is an inexpensive and quick way to get that significant tactical advantage over your enemy for one turn. Spy actions do not get queued. Because the results of spy actions are instantaneous, those actions cannot be cancelled through the action queue (and as a matter of fact do not even get listed in there).

About the Multiplayer Mode
You can play Wargame with up to 6 players on the same iPhone or via network (Bluetooth, WiFi, Internet). As far as local multiplayer matches are concerned, just start a New Game from the main menu and pick as many players as you want. Each player will get his turn in a regular order. On network games, Wargame works on the client/server model (or host/guest). One iPhone sets up a server game and the others join as clients. When you setup a network game as the host, you can set AIs as neutral or aggressive by pressing the button next to the AI type (Neutral in Yellow or Computer AI in Red). Each player can pick its faction in the faction subsection. Please note that when a client changes faction, the game first waits for the server approval which can result in a delay. Finally the host can setup game objective and load a saved network game.
Bluetooth Connectivity
Before making Bluetooth matches, make sure that Bluetooth connectivity is enabled in your Settings. To enable Bluetooth just go to your iPhone Settings then General then Bluetooth and switch it on. Due to some instabilities in iPhone OS 3.x framework, establishing Bluetooth connections can sometime be tricky but once you're connected it should work reliably.
Local Area (WiFi) Connectivity
Before making Local Area matches, make sure that WiFi connectivity is enabled and that you and your friends are on the same WiFi network. To enable WiFi and check your active network, just go to your iPhone Settings then WiFi. Switch it on if necessary, else you'll see a list of networks including the one you are connected to, if any.
Direct IP Connectivity
Direct IP games allows you to play against other players through the Internet. Though, as of now, you have to know the remote IP address of the iPhone you're trying to connect to. Many parameters can prevent Direct IP games from working, such as routers with integrated firewalls or without NAT. You may need to consult the documentation of your router to open a port for the game. As for EDGE/3G connections, this depends on your provider's network architecture.
What's next ?
Right now we are aware that Internet games are difficult to establish and do not favor community aspects. We're working on including OpenFeint and are actively looking at their multiplayer feature (in beta stage). We would have loved to include out of the box Internet game ladders for version 1.0, but unfortunately we're a very small structure and do not have consequent resources; but we are actively thinking about solutions to this issue.

Gameplay Facts
- This game revolves essentially around cash. To make more cash, conquer more countries. The more cash you make, the more units you can buy, the more upgrades you can build and the more countries you can conquer.
- To conquer countries, you NEED to send troops (soldiers). Troops are the only unit capable of overtaking countries. If you send ships, planes, missiles and commandos without troops, you can win battles but you can't overtake a country. The minimum garrison in a country is 1,000 men. - Neutral countries are your best bet as you begin your campaign for world domination. They are easy enough to capture in quantity and give you both money for enrolling troops and strategic outposts for pushing forward your attack plans. Combats
- As of now, combats have a straight formula and do not use random parameters. Due to the vast diversity of parameters taken into account, you can never be sure you'll win a battle (except if you throw in a nuke...).
- Neutral move actions (between countries or your own faction) are flushed before attack moves. - The game only shows you battles related to your attacks or to your countries. You don't see any specific animations for enemy moves which do not involve one of your countries. - When multiple factions attack the same country, it is considered that those factions first combine their effort to defeat that country. Then, the most powerful attack wins the country. |
